Left Hander’s Day

13th August was “International left handers day”.

Though left handers form 10% of the world’s population , being in minority, they face a lot of problems or inconveniences in day to day life. For example –  from  handles of the doors to daily use Scissors all are crafted keeping only right handed people in mind.
And the worst part is many of us right handers aren’t even aware of their troubles…

Even  the dental world is not fair to the left handers and I realised this when I met my colleague Doctor Mansi. The most important part of any dental clinic is the “dental chair ” and it is completely designed keeping in mind the right handers. I realised her difficulties when I saw her working once, she had to arrange instruments separately on left( as using the instrument  tray on right wsnt feasible)
She had to help the assistant with suction all the time
And a bit unpleasant thing was to sit next to the basin where the patient spits all the time.
But even professors advised “outside college you will not get such special chairs in your jobs; So get used to working on right handed chair here only”
Most of the times , the clinic design also is such that working on left side is challenging.

well what do all these challenges mean/
they mean that , these dentists might have to work in not so comfortable, or ergonomically right positions for long hours.
Studies show that left handed dentists suffer more musculoskeletal pain issues of neck and back than their right handed counterparts.
.

Now- a – days ambidextrous chairs are available which have the flexibility to allow working on both sides.
The way we know about left and right handed batsmen, we should be aware and sensitive towards challenges of our left handed colleagues…..
